Marcus Fernaldi Gideon is a popular Indonesian badminton player. He was once designated as the world's first ranked men's doubles player by the Badminton World Federation. Marcus Fernaldi Gideon played in the men's doubles sector partnered with Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, and won the BWF Best Men's Player award for two consecutive years. His popularity has increased after winning seven super series matches in 2017, and nine world tour matches in 2018. Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya are nicknamed 'Minions' by badminton lovers. The nickname arose because their height was below average, however, they were able to play quickly and agilely.
Marcus Fernaldi Gideon was born on May 9, 1991. Marcus is the son of former national badminton player, Kurniahu. He has been familiar with the world of badminton since he was a child. He saw his father coaching the kids at the Jakarta Tangkas club, he tried to imitate his father and as time went on, he fell in love with the sport of badminton. At the age of 13, he started playing professionally. Under the guidance of his father, he started his professional career by winning various tournaments in the singles sector.
Marcus Fernaldi Gideon only started playing in the men's doubles sector when he was 11 years old. The move was taken when he won his maiden doubles title in the Singapore International series. Initially, he was partnered with gold medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Markis Kido. The duet made it to the semifinals at the 2013 Indonesia Masters Grand Prix Gold, before losing to national players, Ronald Alexander and Selvanus Geh. Finally they captured their first Superseries title at the French Open match in 2013.
Marcus-Markis reached the semifinals at the 2014 All England Open and won their second match at the 2014 Indonesia Masters, defeating Selvanus Geh and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the final. Seeing his achievements with Markis Kido, Marcus was invited by PBSI to rejoin the Indonesian National Team. At the start of 2015, he started out paired with Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, and ended the year in the top 20 of the BWF World Rankings, after taking one title at the Chinese Taipei Masters.
At the Chinese Taipei Open, Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya also made it to the final by beating world champions Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the semifinals. However, they lost in the finals to Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan. After this tournament, Indonesian badminton fans nicknamed them Minions.
Former badminton player who is currently a BWF commentator, Gillian Clark, also highlighted the fast playing style shown by Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya has taken the men's doubles game to a new level and made the matches very exciting to watch.
Marcus Fernaldi Gideon is married to Agnes Amelinda who works as a general practitioner. They married on April 14 2018. Both of them have a son who was born on January 29 2019. Their son is named Marcus Fernaldi Gideon Jr.
